- From 1928 to 1960 H.L. Dempsey was employed by Ditto, Inc. as a service technician, then as a sales person and finally as the Manager of the Columbus, Ohio, and then Hartford, Connecticut, branches. In 1960 H.L. Dempsey struck out on his own, founding his own company. He began with the customer base of Ditto customers in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties of Massachusetts. Lawrence T. (Larry) Dempsey joined his father in the business as a service technician in 1966. Two years later, Larry turned his attention to sales. The H.L. Dempsey Co., Inc. became an authorized Canon copier dealer in 1977. The addition of this product line represented a significant change in the natural market of the company from educational and religious to commercial. In 1980, ownership of the company was transferred from H.L. Dempsey to his sons. William J. Dempsey continues to operate the business today.
